BEFORE JOHNNY MATHIS BECAME A MUSIC LEGEND, HE COULD CLEAR A HIGH-JUMP BAR AT A HEIGHT MOST PEOPLE COULDN’T TOUCH. At school, Johnny wasn’t simply “the kid who could sing.” He played basketball, ran hurdles and developed into an exceptional high jumper. At San Francisco State, he reportedly cleared 6 feet 5½ inches—an extraordinary mark for the era. Music was already calling him, but athletics offered another very real future. He even competed in an environment that included future basketball legend Bill Russell. It is one of the great “what if?” stories in entertainment history: What if Johnny Mathis had chosen sport instead? America might have gained an elite athlete—but it would have lost the voice that eventually gave “Chances Are” and “Misty” their timeless magic.

BEFORE “MISTY,” ONE WOMAN HEARD SOMETHING IN JOHNNY MATHIS THAT THE WORLD HADN’T DISCOVERED YET. Johnny Mathis was only 13 when his father introduced him to vocal teacher Connie Cox. She recognized his potential and began teaching him proper breathing, classical technique and voice control—lessons that would help shape one of the most recognizable voices in popular music. Mathis studied with her for roughly six years, long before screaming audiences, gold records and sold-out theaters entered his life. What listeners later heard as effortless elegance was actually supported by years of discipline behind closed doors. Connie Cox never became the household name Johnny did, but every time that unmistakably smooth voice floated through a room, a little piece of her teaching was there.

“MAURICE…” A single call of her father’s name was enough to plunge the entire arena into silence. Samantha Gibb transformed the 2026 Grammy stage into a tearful tribute to her legendary father.

Long before Johnny Cash and June Carter became country music’s most celebrated couple, the Man in Black was fighting battles that fame and fortune could not solve. By the 1960s, Johnny’s career had brought him extraordinary success, but his dependence on prescription drugs and the breakdown of his first marriage had left his personal life in turmoil. June Carter knew the complicated man behind the famous voice. Their relationship developed over years of touring and performing together, even as Johnny struggled with addiction. In February 1968, during a concert in London, Ontario, Canada, Johnny proposed to June onstage. They married just weeks later. Their marriage would last 35 years, until June’s death in May 2003. Johnny followed her only four months later. Their love story was never as simple as a country ballad. It involved difficult choices, personal struggles, forgiveness, and years of commitment.
