Introduction:

Fort Payne, Alabama is alive with excitement this weekend as country music fans from across the nation flock to the town for a series of Fan Appreciation events, all building up to the highly anticipated return of June Jam — a legendary concert brought back by the iconic country supergroup Alabama after a 26-year hiatus. But behind the music and celebration lies a deeply personal story — a love story that continues to inspire and give back.

At the heart of this year’s June Jam weekend is Lisa Cook, the wife of the late Jeff Cook, Alabama’s lead guitarist and founding member. Their story began in the early 1990s, when Lisa, a flight attendant at the time, met Jeff — a moment that changed both of their lives forever. After five years of dating, they were married the night before June Jam 1995, in a quiet, heartfelt ceremony in front of the fireplace at their beloved Cook Castle.

From that day on, June Jam became more than a concert — it was a celebration of love, music, and togetherness. Lisa remembers Jeff not only as a gifted musician but as someone who was happiest when surrounded by people, laughter, and joy. “He was happy when everybody was happy,” she recalls. “He made everything okay.”

Yet even the most magical love stories face heartbreak. In 2012, Jeff was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Though he continued performing with Alabama until 2017, his health eventually required constant care — something Lisa discovered was in critically short supply. Caregivers were hard to find, and even harder to afford.

In response, and with Jeff’s encouragement in his final year, the couple founded the Jeff and Lisa Cook Foundation. Its mission is clear: to inspire and train professional caregivers and provide financial assistance to those in need of care. Jeff’s personal motto, “Never let the music stop, or the party end — no bad days,” continues to guide Lisa’s efforts and the foundation’s work.

This morning at 10 a.m., a special fundraiser will be held at Cook Castle to benefit the foundation. Every dollar raised will go directly toward training and supporting caregivers — a fitting tribute to Jeff’s legacy and the love that still fuels Lisa’s tireless work.

And of course, the music lives on. Tomorrow’s June Jam concert at the VFW Fairgrounds will feature Alabama’s surviving members Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry, joined by a star-studded lineup including Jamey Johnson, The Oak Ridge Boys, Mark Wills, Neal McCoy, and more. Tickets are still available through Ticketmaster, offering fans not just a concert, but a powerful celebration of life, love, and country music at its finest.

This weekend, Fort Payne isn’t just the stage for a musical comeback — it’s where a legacy of love and care continues to grow.
