RADIO MADE JOHNNY MATHIS A VOICE — HOLLYWOOD HELPED TURN HIM INTO A FACE AMERICA WOULD NEVER FORGET. As Johnny’s records began climbing the charts, Hollywood came calling. He performed “It’s Not for Me to Say” in the 1957 film *Lizzie*, appearing as a singer at a piano bar. The following year, he appeared in *A Certain Smile*, performing the title song. These appearances mattered. Until then, many listeners primarily knew Mathis through the magical voice coming from their radios and record players. Now they could see the elegant young man behind it. He possessed a calm stage presence that perfectly matched his music. Johnny never needed wild choreography or theatrical tricks. He simply stood beneath the lights and sang—and somehow that restraint became part of his extraordinary appeal.

After his jazz-oriented debut failed to turn him into an immediate star, Johnny Mathis began recording romantic material better suited to the extraordinary tenderness of his voice. Among those early recordings was “Wonderful! Wonderful!”—a song that helped transform the young San Francisco singer into a national sensation. Suddenly, listeners understood what made Mathis different. He didn’t overpower a love song; he seemed to float through it. That delicate style would become his signature for generations. “Wonderful! Wonderful!” was more than an early hit. It represented the moment the industry finally found the perfect setting for a voice that had been waiting to be heard. And once America heard it, Johnny Mathis was never quite anonymous again.
