Achieving notable success, the track secured the third position on the Billboard singles chart in the US on August 10, 1963. Simultaneously, it claimed the ninth spot on the Billboard Rhythm and Blues singles chart, marking Presley’s final appearance in the top ten on those charts.
The RIAA awarded the single a “Gold” certification for surpassing 500,000 units in sales within the US. Further international triumph unfolded as the song claimed the summit of Japan’s Utamatic record chart in the autumn of 1963. Notably, the British audience encountered the song for the first time in June 1963 on the BBC television show Juke Box Jury. John Lennon, renowned leader of The Beatles and a guest on the show, expressed a dissenting opinion, deeming the song “a miss” and likening Elvis Presley to “Bing Crosby now” in terms of musical style. Contrary to this assessment, the track ascended to the top spot in the UK for a single week.
