AWAY FROM THE STAGE, JOHNNY MATHIS HAD ANOTHER PASSION MOST CASUAL FANS NEVER SAW. When Johnny wasn’t recording or performing, he loved to cook. It was a skill rooted in childhood, when his mother taught him his way around the kitchen. Over the years, cooking became far more than an occasional hobby. It offered something fame rarely could: normality. Imagine the man whose voice filled concert halls quietly preparing food at home, away from applause, cameras and expectations. Perhaps that contrast explains part of Johnny Mathis’ remarkable longevity. He maintained interests that had nothing to do with being “Johnny Mathis the star.” Onstage he belonged to millions. In the kitchen, he could simply be Johnny—a man enjoying one of life’s oldest pleasures: making something good for people he cared about.

Maurice Gibb and Lulu Planned a Family Wedding—Then Three Thousand Fans Arrived. On February 18, 1969, Maurice Gibb married Lulu at St. James’s Church in Gerrards Cross. He was nineteen; she was twenty. Outside, an estimated three thousand fans gathered, turning a family ceremony into a public spectacle. Contemporary reporting captured a revealing detail: Hugh Gibb filmed some of the onlookers as his son’s wedding became another event for the cameras. Lulu wore a white mini-dress beneath a long, hooded coat, an outfit as unmistakably of its moment as the crowd surrounding her. The marriage began while both singers were navigating demanding careers, with Lulu’s Eurovision appearance only weeks away. For Maurice, usually positioned between his brothers in the public imagination, this was an intensely personal milestone under extraordinary scrutiny. The photographs preserve the celebration; the crowd reveals how little privacy two young pop stars could expect, even on their wedding day.

“HE WAS ONLY 33, WITH A BEAUTIFUL FAMILY AND A VOICE THAT WAS TAKING COUNTRY MUSIC BY STORM — BUT ON MAY 9, 1989, KEITH WHITLEY’S LIFE CAME TO A TRAGIC END JUST AS HIS GREATEST YEARS SEEMED TO BE BEGINNING…” By 1989, Keith Whitley was becoming one of country music’s most admired young voices. His recordings of “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” “When You Say Nothing at All,” and “I’m No Stranger to the Rain” had captured the hearts of millions. Behind the success was a man who had struggled for years with alcohol addiction. Keith had married fellow country singer Lorrie Morgan in 1986, and together they were raising their young son, Jesse Keith Whitley. Despite the happiness he found in family life and the recognition he was finally receiving, his personal battle continued. On May 9, 1989, Keith died from alcohol poisoning at his home near Nashville. He was only 33. His death shocked the country music community and left behind a grieving family and an unfinished musical journey. Yet decades later, his voice continues to touch listeners who understand the pain, tenderness, and longing in his songs. Keith Whitley’s life ended far too early, but the emotions he poured into his music have never grown old.

“HE GAVE AWAY HIS SEAT ON A PLANE — HOURS LATER, BUDDY HOLLY WAS DEAD, AND WAYLON JENNINGS WAS LEFT WITH WORDS HE WOULD NEVER FORGET…” On February 2, 1959, a young Waylon Jennings was touring with Buddy Holly across the American Midwest. Waylon was playing bass in Holly’s band, still years away from becoming one of country music’s greatest legends. That night, after a concert in Clear Lake, Iowa, Buddy arranged a small plane to take several musicians to their next destination. Waylon had a seat on the aircraft, but he gave it to J. P. Richardson, better known as the Big Bopper, who was feeling ill. Before the plane departed, Buddy jokingly told Waylon he hoped the bus would freeze up. Waylon jokingly replied that he hoped Buddy’s plane would crash. Hours later, the aircraft went down, killing Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper, and pilot Roger Peterson. Waylon survived because he wasn’t aboard. He later spoke about the guilt he carried over those final words. Waylon Jennings went on to become a country music legend. But the night he lost Buddy Holly remained one of the most painful memories of his life.
