“I Got Lucky” is a song that Elvis Presley recorded for the 1962 movie “Kid Galahad.” This film is a remake of the original 1937 version, with Elvis portraying the character of a boxer. He performs this song within the movie. Elvis recorded “I Got Lucky” on October 27, 1961, at RCA’s Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee.
The first release of this song on a record was on the soundtrack EP for “Kid Galahad” in August 1962.
In 1963, it was also released as a single in Europe, with “Girls! Girls! Girls!” on the flip side.
In 1971, the song was featured as the title track on the budget-friendly LP called “I Got Lucky.”
About “Kid Galahad”:
The screenplay of “Kid Galahad” weaves between light romantic comedy and dramatic moments. In his earlier films, Elvis’ characters often resisted the romantic advances of female admirers initially. However, in this film, his character Walter Gulick is immediately captivated by Rose Grogan, played by Joan Blackman, who also portrayed his love interest in “Blue Hawaii.” While her role in “Blue Hawaii” was more active, in “Kid Galahad,” her character mostly involves gazing seductively into Elvis’ eyes.
In a similar vein to “Follow That Dream,” a group of gangsters arrives in town, leading to some of the more serious moments in “Kid Galahad.” One of the film’s most gripping sequences features Elvis coming to the rescue when his trainer, portrayed by Charles Bronson, has his hands injured by a pair of menacing mobsters.
As expected, “Kid Galahad” includes the customary musical performances by Presley, strategically incorporated to attract his devoted fan base to the theaters. Predictably, these musical interludes unsettled film critics, who, perhaps being of a generation less inclined to appreciate Presley’s style, viewed them as disruptive to the film’s narrative. A critic from The Times, Crowther, bemoaned Elvis’ “expressing himself at odd moments in conspicuously non-combative songs, seemingly emanating from a strained vocal cord.” Illustrating the disconnect between film critique and musical taste, Variety’s reviewer made an unconventional recommendation to RCA Victor. The review observed, “Elvis sings approximately half a dozen songs, with ‘Home Is Where The Heart Is,’ a sentimental ballad with jukebox potential, standing out as the most commercially viable.”
