When Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026, the world lost far more than a country music legend. It lost a songwriter, entertainer, entrepreneur, storyteller, and philanthropist whose influence reached generations far beyond the stage.
But for Dolly’s family, remembering her has never been about flowers, elaborate ceremonies, or grand displays of grief. Instead, they have asked fans to honor her in the same way she spent much of her life helping others: by giving.
Following Dolly’s death at age 80, her family shared a heartfelt tribute celebrating her seven-decade career, timeless music, warmth, and generosity. They also made one special request. Rather than sending flowers, they encouraged fans around the world to make donations to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the childhood literacy program that became one of the most meaningful parts of her legacy.
The choice could hardly have been more fitting.
Dolly launched the Imagination Library in 1995 through the Dollywood Foundation. The idea was deeply personal. Her father, Robert Lee Parton, was intelligent and hardworking but never learned to read or write. Dolly later explained that his experience inspired her to create a program that could give children something he had been denied: the opportunity to discover the world through books.
What began as a local effort in Dolly’s home county of Sevier County, Tennessee, eventually became an international movement.
By June 2026, the Imagination Library had gifted more than 325 million books and was sending more than 3.5 million books every month to children in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland. The books are provided free of charge to children from birth through age five.
For Dolly, however, the numbers were never the whole story.
She once described herself as almost “addicted” to the feeling of giving—the knowledge that something she had done could make another person’s life a little better. Her philanthropy extended far beyond literacy, reaching education, healthcare, disaster relief, and other causes.
She even helped fund early research connected to the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, while the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy recognized her decades of charitable work in 2022.
And in one of her final years, her mission continued to inspire others. In July 2026, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce donated $2 million to the Imagination Library, prompting Dolly to publicly thank them for helping children discover the joy of reading.
That may be the most beautiful part of Dolly Parton’s legacy.
Her family is not asking fans simply to remember the woman who sang “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You.”
They are asking them to continue what she started.
A book placed in a child’s hands. A dream made possible. A young mind encouraged to imagine something bigger.
That is the kind of tribute Dolly would understand.
Because Dolly Parton spent her life proving that a person does not have to come from much to give much.
And long after the applause fades, millions of children will continue turning the pages of books bearing her name—quietly carrying her dream into the future.
