On June 26, 1977, nearly 18,000 people packed Indianapolis’ Market Square Arena to see Elvis Presley perform. They came expecting another night with the King of Rock ’n’ Roll. Instead, without knowing it, they witnessed the final live performance of one of the most influential entertainers in music history.
By that summer, Elvis was only 42, but his life had changed dramatically from the energetic young star who had once revolutionized popular music. Years of intense touring, serious health problems, and dependence on prescription medications had taken a visible toll. The man who had once seemed almost larger than life was now struggling physically, even as his commitment to performing remained remarkably strong.

He opened with “See See Rider” and moved through a set that reached across his career, including “Jailhouse Rock,” “Hound Dog,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Hurt,” and “Johnny B.
