About The Song

“(Now And Then There’s) A Fool Such As I” was penned by Bill Trader in 1952 and subsequently captured by Hank Snow later that same year. Snow’s rendition (RCA 5034) secured the #4 spot on Billboard’s country chart. In the initial months of 1953, Jo Stafford (Columbia 39930), Tommy Edwards (MGM 11395), and The Robins (RCA 47-5175) each contributed their own interpretations of the track. Notably, only Stafford’s rendition made its mark on the chart, securing the #20 position on the Most Sold Singles list.

Elvis Presley recorded “(Now And Then There’s) A Fool Such As I” on June 10, 1958, at RCA’s Nashville studios, during a break from his military service. Take 9 was the chosen version for release. Ray Walker of the Jordanaires served as the bass singer, marking his inaugural session with Elvis. The single by Elvis reached an impressive #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, maintaining its presence for 15 consecutive weeks. The Fleetwoods’ “Come Softly to Me” held the top spot, preventing “A Fool Such As I” from claiming #1. On the rhythm & blues chart, the song attained the #16 position. In England, it enjoyed a reign at #1 for 5 weeks and ultimately sold over a million copies.

The Jordanaires, recognized for their harmonious backing vocals, contributed their talents to Elvis Presley’s rendition of this song, as they did for many of his recordings spanning from 1956 to 1972.

Now and then there’s a fool such as I
Pardon me, if I’m sentimental
When we say goodbye
Don’t be angry with me should I cry
When you’re gone, yet I’ll dream
A little dream as years go by
Now and then there’s a fool such as INow and then there’s a fool such as I am over you
You taught me how to love
And now you say that we are through
I’m a fool, but I’ll love you dear
Until the day I die
Now and then there’s a fool such as INow and then there’s a fool such as I am over you
You taught me how to love
And now you say that we are through
I’m a fool, but I’ll love you dear
Until the day I die
Now and then there’s a fool such as I
Now and then there’s a fool such as I
Now and then there’s a fool such as I
