WHY WOULD JOHNNY MATHIS WALK AWAY FROM THE RECORD LABEL THAT HELPED MAKE HIM A STAR? By the early 1960s, Johnny Mathis had already achieved extraordinary success with Columbia Records. Yet in 1963, he made a bold move and joined Mercury Records, where he gained greater creative involvement and worked with distinguished musicians and arrangers. He also established Rojon Productions, taking greater control over the business behind his music. Eventually, Johnny returned to Columbia, beginning another remarkably long chapter with the label. Looking back, the Mercury years reveal something often overlooked about Mathis. Behind the gentle voice was an artist willing to take professional risks. He wasn’t content merely to repeat yesterday’s formula. Even at the height of success, Johnny Mathis was searching for ways to control where his music went next.

“AMERICA FIRST FELL IN LOVE WITH CONWAY TWITTY AS A ROCK ‘N’ ROLL STAR — BUT HE WALKED AWAY FROM THAT SUCCESS TO CHASE A DREAM THAT WOULD MAKE HIM A COUNTRY MUSIC LEGEND…” Before Conway Twitty became one of country music’s most beloved voices, he was already a successful rock and roll performer. In 1958, his recording of “It’s Only Make Believe” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, turning the young singer into a national sensation. But Conway wanted something different. Despite his success, he believed country music was where his heart truly belonged. Changing musical directions was risky. Fans knew him as a rock singer, and Nashville wasn’t immediately convinced he could become a country star. For several years, he struggled to establish himself in the genre. Then, in 1968, “Next in Line” became his first No. 1 country hit. What followed was one of the most remarkable careers in country music history, with classics like “Hello Darlin’,” “You’ve Never Been This Far Before,” and “I’d Love to Lay You Down.” Conway Twitty didn’t simply follow the road to fame. He risked the success he already had to become the artist he truly wanted to be.

FOR MILLIONS OF FAMILIES, CHRISTMAS DIDN’T REALLY BEGIN UNTIL JOHNNY MATHIS STARTED SINGING. Johnny Mathis built one of popular music’s great romantic catalogs, but his Christmas recordings created a different kind of legacy. His 1958 album *Merry Christmas* became an enduring holiday favorite, eventually achieving multi-platinum status. Year after year, his warm interpretations returned to living rooms as families decorated trees, prepared dinner and gathered with people they loved. That is why Johnny’s legacy cannot be measured only through chart positions or record sales. For many listeners, his voice became attached to memory itself—the sound of childhood Christmases, parents who are no longer here, old family homes and traditions passed between generations. Few singers ever become part of a holiday. Johnny Mathis somehow became part of Christmas.
