Introduction:
For years, Kathy Westmoreland remained one of the women closest to Elvis Presley while carefully keeping the most personal parts of their relationship private. As one of the singers who worked alongside Elvis for years, she saw a side of the superstar that few fans ever experienced. But when she eventually reflected on their romantic relationship, her words were surprisingly honest: loving Elvis did not necessarily mean she was the right woman to build a life with him.
Westmoreland’s relationship with Elvis was complicated from the beginning. In her memoir, Elvis and Kathy, she described their early romance as deeply emotional and acknowledged that Elvis was caring and gentle with her. But she also understood the reality surrounding him. Elvis was already married to Priscilla Presley and had a daughter, Lisa Marie. Westmoreland knew that any fantasy of becoming his wife would have to confront a life that was already enormously complicated.
What makes her account particularly interesting is that she did not simply blame Elvis or portray herself as the victim. Instead, she looked honestly at her own personality. She admitted that she was fiercely career-oriented and did not want marriage or children at that point in her life. Elvis’s world, meanwhile, was crowded with people, constant travel, demanding performances and a lifestyle that required extraordinary patience from anyone close to him.
She eventually concluded that she might have been the wrong woman for Elvis.
Westmoreland explained that she did not want a relationship in which she was expected to be available around the clock, constantly worrying about a partner’s meals, health and personal needs. She also admitted that she could never accept an open marriage or comfortably share a husband with other women. Looking back with greater maturity, she believed that a marriage between them probably would not have lasted.
That admission is striking because it challenges the romantic fantasy surrounding Elvis’s relationships. Sometimes two people can genuinely care about each other and still be fundamentally incompatible.
Westmoreland also offered a complicated view of Elvis himself. In her account, he was generous, affectionate and capable of enormous warmth, but he was not naturally suited to the kind of exclusive relationship she wanted. His emotional world seemed to extend toward his fans, friends, family and the many people surrounding him.
Her perspective becomes even more revealing when she discusses Elvis’s later relationship with Ginger Alden. Westmoreland believed Elvis appeared happier and, at least during that period, more committed to one woman than she had previously seen him. She was glad that he had found someone who seemed to make him happy.
That does not erase the complicated history between Westmoreland and Elvis. Instead, it shows how her feelings evolved. She could still love him while recognizing that she did not belong in the role of his wife.
Westmoreland’s long career with Elvis also gave her a unique place in his story. She performed with him on stage and worked alongside the Sweet Inspirations during his Las Vegas engagements and national tours from 1969 through 1977.
Perhaps that is why her memories carry a different weight.
She did not need to turn Elvis into either a perfect romantic hero or a villain. She remembered a complicated man—and accepted that, despite the love between them, they were ultimately better as friends than lovers.
Sometimes the most honest ending to a love story is not “we stopped caring.”
It is simply: “We loved each other, but we could not build the same life.”
