Introduction:
For decades, the story of Elvis Presley and Ann-Margret has remained one of Hollywood’s most fascinating romances. Their chemistry in Viva Las Vegas was undeniable, but according to Ann-Margret’s own memories, what happened between them went far beyond a movie set. The painful part was that their relationship did not end because the connection disappeared. It ended because Elvis already had another future waiting for him.
When Elvis and Ann-Margret met while making Viva Las Vegas in 1963, they quickly discovered how much they had in common. Both had experienced sudden fame, loved performing, valued their families and privacy, and shared a passion for motorcycles and music. In her memoir, Ann-Margret described their connection as something almost instinctive, even calling Elvis her “soulmate.”
Their relationship soon became more than playful chemistry between two young stars. They spent time together away from the cameras, shared private moments and continued seeing each other after filming ended. Ann-Margret later acknowledged that their relationship lasted for close to a year and that they even talked about marriage.
But there was a problem neither of them could simply wish away.
Before Ann-Margret entered Elvis’s life, he had already built a serious relationship with Priscilla Beaulieu. Priscilla had moved to Memphis in 1963, and expectations surrounding her future with Elvis were becoming increasingly important. The growing relationship between Elvis and Ann-Margret therefore created more than romantic tension. It placed Elvis between a powerful new connection and commitments that had existed before it. Later accounts describe Priscilla as deeply affected by the rumors surrounding the two stars.
That is what makes Ann-Margret’s later reflections so striking. She did not portray Elvis as someone who simply stopped caring about her. Instead, she remembered circumstances and commitments that made their relationship impossible to continue.
There was also a remarkable sign that the affection between them did not simply disappear. According to accounts surrounding Ann-Margret’s memoir, Elvis continued sending her flower arrangements shaped like guitars for her Las Vegas opening nights. The tradition reportedly continued for years, with one heartbreaking exception: August 16, 1977, the night Elvis died.
Yet Ann-Margret eventually built a completely different life. On May 8, 1967, exactly one week after Elvis married Priscilla, she married actor Roger Smith. Their marriage lasted 50 years, until Smith’s death in 2017. In later years, Ann-Margret spoke warmly about Smith and described their long relationship as one of the great accomplishments of her life.
Perhaps that explains why she has always been so protective of her memories of Elvis. In a CBS interview, when asked about her favorite memory of him, she refused to share it, explaining that it was deeply personal and belonged between the two of them.
Their story was never simply about choosing one person over another.
It was about meeting someone who felt extraordinarily familiar at the wrong moment in life.
Ann-Margret and Elvis may have imagined another future, but Elvis had already created promises that shaped the future he ultimately chose. Their romance ended, but the affection, memories and respect apparently survived.
Sometimes the most heartbreaking love stories are not the ones that end because people stop loving each other.
They are the ones that end because love alone is not enough.
