To the world, Elvis and Priscilla Presley looked like the ultimate celebrity love story. The King of Rock and Roll had found his queen, married her in Las Vegas, and welcomed a daughter into their glamorous world. But behind the gates of Graceland, their relationship was far more complicated than the fairy tale suggested.
Their story began in Germany in 1959, when Elvis was serving in the U.S. Army. Priscilla was only 14 when she met the 24-year-old superstar, a beginning that has remained controversial because of the enormous difference in their ages and circumstances. They stayed in contact after Elvis returned to the United States, and Priscilla eventually moved to Memphis in 1963 to finish high school while remaining close to him.
Their relationship unfolded inside a world of extraordinary fame. Elvis’s career demanded constant travel, filming, concerts, and attention from women around him. Rumors about his relationships with actresses, including Ann-Margret during Viva Las Vegas, added another layer of insecurity. Some of the stories were exaggerated by the press, while others became subjects of later biographies and personal accounts. For Priscilla, however, the constant speculation was part of a reality in which privacy was almost impossible.
After years together, Elvis proposed on Christmas Eve 1966. They married on May 1, 1967, at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas in a relatively small ceremony. Nine months later, their daughter Lisa Marie was born. For a brief period, the couple appeared to have created the family life many fans had imagined.
But marriage did not remove the pressures surrounding them. Elvis’s demanding career, his increasingly complicated personal life, and the emotional distance between the couple gradually weakened their relationship. Priscilla later described feeling that she needed to discover who she was outside Elvis’s enormous shadow.
By the early 1970s, the marriage was unraveling. Priscilla’s relationship with karate instructor Mike Stone became an affair, according to her own memoir, while Elvis also became involved with other women. Their separation was formalized in 1972, and their divorce was granted on October 9, 1973. Importantly, the end of their marriage did not become the end of their connection. They shared custody of Lisa Marie and remained close friends.
That detail may be the most revealing part of their story.
Elvis and Priscilla had failed as husband and wife, but they did not completely fail as two people who had shared an extraordinary chapter of life. Priscilla continued to care about Elvis, especially as his health and prescription-drug problems became increasingly concerning.
When Elvis died at Graceland on August 16, 1977, Priscilla was no longer his wife. But she was still the mother of his only child and someone who had known him more intimately than most people ever could.
Their marriage was not destroyed by one single betrayal or one dramatic argument. It appears to have been worn down by years of fame, separation, jealousy, loneliness, personal choices, and two people gradually becoming different from the young couple who first met in Germany.
Perhaps that is why the Elvis and Priscilla story remains so fascinating.
