Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton: A Bond That Outlived the Spotlight
When Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, millions of people expected Miley Cyrus to say something unforgettable about the woman she had known all her life.
Instead, Miley chose something much harder: she kept the most important parts private.
In an Instagram tribute posted the following day, Cyrus described losing her godmother as almost impossible to put into words. She explained that the most sacred moments between them belonged somewhere beyond the stage and beyond the glamour—and would remain there. Her message contained no long collection of stories, no attempt to reveal secrets and no detailed account of their final days together.
For a relationship that had been public for more than two decades, that restraint said a great deal.
The story began before Miley Cyrus was even born. In the early 1990s, Dolly had become friends with Miley’s father, Billy Ray Cyrus. When Billy Ray told her that he and his wife were expecting a daughter, he asked Dolly to become the child’s godmother. Dolly accepted. Over the years, she would jokingly call herself Miley’s “fairy godmother”—and she eventually became much more than a ceremonial figure in the young singer’s life.
When Hannah Montana premiered in 2006, Dolly appeared as Aunt Dolly, returning several times throughout the Disney Channel series. What could have been a simple celebrity cameo became another chapter in their real relationship.
Their connection eventually moved beyond television and into music. Miley and Dolly performed “Jolene” together repeatedly, while Dolly appeared on Miley’s 2017 album Younger Now on “Rainbowland.” Years later, Dolly returned the gesture by recording Miley’s “Wrecking Ball” for her 2023 rock album.
The relationship was never simply about Dolly helping a younger artist. It worked both ways. Dolly embraced Miley’s generation, while Miley repeatedly acknowledged the influence, kindness and guidance she received from her godmother.

To celebrate her 80th birthday, Dolly released a new version of “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” a song she originally wrote in 1976 during a major turning point in her career. This time, she invited Miley Cyrus, Reba McEntire, Queen Latifah and Lainey Wilson to join her. All net proceeds from the recording and video benefited pediatric cancer research at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
At the time, it was simply a celebration of Dolly’s milestone birthday and a message of hope. After her death, however, the recording naturally carries a different emotional weight. But it is important not to rewrite history and turn an ordinary birthday project into a farewell that nobody could have known was coming.
Miley’s tribute understood that distinction.
She remembered Dolly without turning their private relationship into public property. She spoke about love, music, transformation and the responsibility to keep moving forward. Most importantly, she appeared to follow the lesson Dolly had demonstrated throughout her own life: feel deeply, create something meaningful, and keep going.
Dolly Parton spent decades giving the world her songs, humor and stories while fiercely protecting the people and moments she considered sacred.
In the end, Miley honored her by doing the same.
She did not tell the world everything.
