Introduction:

Thank You, I Love You”: Dolly Parton’s Niece Opens Up About Losing Her Family’s Matriarch

One week after the world lost Dolly Parton, the grief inside her family remains painfully real.

For millions of fans, Dolly was a global icon—a legendary singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist whose music became part of their lives. But for her family, she was something much more intimate: a beloved aunt, a source of wisdom, and the matriarch they could never imagine living without.

In an emotional interview with Extra, Dolly’s niece Jada opened up about the days following her aunt’s death. She admitted that the experience had been “really difficult and very surreal,” but also unexpectedly bittersweet. Amid the grief, the family had witnessed something extraordinary: just how deeply Dolly was loved around the world.

“All of these tributes have helped so much,” Jada explained, describing how messages from fans and fellow artists had helped the family begin to process an unimaginable loss.

For Jada, however, Dolly was never simply a superstar.

“I can’t remember a life without her in it,” she said.

That single sentence captured the depth of their relationship. Dolly had been part of Jada’s world for as long as she could remember, offering encouragement, humor and the kind of advice that somehow seemed perfectly tailored to whoever needed it.

Even in mourning, Jada could almost hear what Dolly would have told the family: stop crying, get back to work, and “love each other real hard.”

It was classic Dolly—tenderness wrapped in humor, strength disguised as simplicity.

Jada also revealed that the family had deliberately kept Dolly’s health struggles private because Dolly never wanted people to worry about her. Her sudden passing was therefore a profound shock, even to those closest to her.

Yet Dolly’s influence was already helping Jada find her way forward.

During her appearance on the television series Claim to Fame, Jada received an unforgettable surprise when Dolly appeared to support her. The moment became deeply emotional, particularly because Jada had sought Dolly’s blessing before joining the show.

Dolly’s advice was characteristically playful: go for it, but “don’t show your butt” and keep her room clean.

Behind the jokes was something much more meaningful—a lifetime of unconditional encouragement.

Jada recalled another piece of advice Dolly frequently gave her: “Why are you worried about what other people think?”

Those words became especially powerful when Jada performed at the Grand Ole Opry tribute honoring Dolly after her death. Standing on that stage, surrounded by emotion and memories, she tried to hold on to the lesson her aunt had taught her.

“I hope that she would have been real proud,” Jada said.

She also made clear that Dolly’s legacy would not stop with her death. Jada plans to continue writing music, listening to other people’s stories and helping aspiring writers discover their own creative voices.

“Everything she taught me I’ll use in everything I do,” she said.

And perhaps that is one of the most beautiful ways to carry someone forward—not by trying to replace them, but by allowing what they taught you to become part of everything you create.

Asked what she would say if Dolly were sitting beside her today, Jada did not need a long speech.

“Thank you so much. And I love you so much. And I know you’re okay.”

Then, through the tears, came a small but powerful declaration:

“We’re going to be okay.”

For a family grieving its matriarch, those words are more than reassurance.

They are a promise to keep going—with Dolly’s love, laughter and lessons still guiding the way.
